sunshine-with-god

I think January is a good time to think about new beginnings.  I, personally, gave up making resolutions several years ago because making them seemed to set me up for failure. Instead, I try to approach each day attempting to do something better than I did the day before.  Does this always happen?  I wish I could tell you it does but that would not be truthful.  But when I do succeed in using this approach; it gives me another chance to either improve myself or do something that makes a difference in the life of someone else.

For me, I start my day by having some “ME” time.  Mornings work better for me because my mind is fresh after resting for a while and it seems “life” is always getting in the way or I am too tried to have that “ME” time at the end of the day.  I begin by reading something that will feed my mind.  This can be something spiritual, personally I enjoy reading verses in my Bible and/or I read something motivational or inspirational.

I read something a few years ago that said our brain is more receptive early in the mornings and that we retain whatever we “feed” it.  I can’t remember where I read that but it seems to work for me.  I am now reading for the second year, devotional material by Sarah Young.  A friend gave me this book last year for Christmas and I read from it each day and now am starting to read it once more.  It is so well written and such good material it seems fresh again this year.

Most experts tell us we achieve more of our goals if we write them down so you may want to think about starting a personal journal where you record your thoughts, goals, achievements and yes, disappointments and discouragement.  A journal is also a good way to look back and see all the things we accomplish every day.  By the way, it is OK to pat yourself on the back when you do something worthwhile or good.  It is also a great time to “brainstorm” or “think outside the box” and record ways to improve when things don’t go so well.  I sometimes think we look around us and see and (compare) ourselves to others way too much.  We need to remember we are all “1 OF A KIND”, special and precious in our own unique way(s) and we should learn to appreciate and celebrate that fact daily.

Today my motivational reading asked the question of “WHO IS BOSS” and it made me think that we all need to answer that question each and every day.  Who is control of your life and what will you do to make a difference today.  It does not always need to be profound but when you lay your head down on your pillow, can you say you have been a better person today or made even a small difference in the lives of those around you.

To make long lasting changes, I believe first you must develop habits.  They say it takes 30 days to make it a habit so I am challenging each of us to develop the habit of taking control of our life each day.

I am older and yes, also a little wiser now and I have come to the stage of my life when time seems so fleeting and goes by so fast.  It seems I blink and another year is gone so don’t wait……………………..

NOW is the time for all of us to take control of ourselves!  Let me know how you do as we begin 2014.
